Manuel Veth and Tim Bogdachev report from Vancouver –

Welcome to our Major League Soccer Whitecaps vs Earthquakes Minute by Minute report. The Vancouver Whitecaps are currently first in the standings and with just two games left could secure top spot in the Western Conference with a victory over the San Jose Earthquakes. San Jose Earthquakes in the meantime need to win this game to keep their playoff hopes alive.

Full-Time Whitecaps vs Earthquakes 1-1

90+1. Minute

Reyna brings in a corner that is missed by both Waston and Shea, who would have to just nick it into the empty net.

90. Minute

Three minutes will be added.

88. Minute

Alphonso Davies now with a run forward, but instead of making the pass to Reyna the teenager opts to go head first through San Jose Earthquakes’ defence and loses the ball.

87. Minute

Vancouver remains on the attack. Reyna brings in a corner that is met by Shea and his header is just over the goal.

85. Minute

Attacking spell here by the Whitecaps. Several shot attempts are blocked by San Jose until the ball ends up on the right wing where Nerwinski is brought down.

84. Minute

Fredy Montero is replaced by Erik Hurtado. Carl Robinson 101 substitutions here.

81. Minute

Free-kick for San Jose from the left edge of the box and Marinovic has to make a stretched save to keep the ball out.

78. Minute

San Jose now with a spell of pressure. Qazaishvili with a shot from distance that just misses the net.

76. Minute

Goal San Jose! Valeri Qazaishvili escapes Vancouver’s defence after receiving a great pass by Wondolowski and then beats Marinovic to make it 1-1. As it stands the Whitecaps would not have secured either first or second in the West.

74. Minute

Seattle have made it 3-0. For now, that result does not matter though as the Whitecaps continue to lead against San Jose.

72. Minute

Valeri Qazaishvili with a shot from the distance. Marinovic does not need to react, however, as the shot is off target.

70. Minute

As predictable as always. Carl Robinson brings on Davies for Techera.

69. Minute

Kendall Waston wins the ball in Vancouver’s end and breaks forward. The big defender ends up winning a corner for the Whitecaps, which results in nothing.

68. Minute

Looks like Alphonso Davies will be Vancouver’s first substitution.

66. Minute

Portland have doubled their lead. As long as the Whitecaps defend their lead it will not matter.

64. Minute

Again the Whitecaps again Reyna and Montero with a great attacking run. Reyna and Montero combine well, but Montero’s eventual finish is too soft and easily handled by Tarbell.

62. Minute

The next attacking wave by the Whitecaps. Reyna pushes forward on the right flank and drills a low pass to Montero, who fails to control the ball inside the box.

59. Minute

Fredy Montero tests Tarbell with a shot from distance. The goalkeeper has to stretch himself to make the stop. The following corner results in nothing.

58. Minute

We are getting into that first substitution territory. What will Carl Robinson do? Will he go for his usual three-man substitution up front or opt for fresh legs in the back?

55. Minute

Vancouver are now pushing for the second goal. Techera with a quick succession of crosses that are just about cleared by San Jose’s backline.

54. Minute

Great chance for Vancouver. Marcel de Jong with a great cross from the left-wing, which just misses Fredy Montero.

52. Minute

The free-kick is straight into Vancouver’s wall.

51. Minute

Good free-kick situation for San Jose after Brek Shea brings down Anibal Godoy just ouside the box.

47. Minute

Big chance for Vancouver. After winning the ball in their own half the Whitecaps swarm forward with Yordy Reyna holding the ball. The Peruvian then picks off Montero his shot, however, is saved by Andrew Tarbell.

46. Minute

We are back underway.

Whitecaps vs Earthquakes – Halftime

Here are the scores from the other stadiums:

Vancouver are halfway there! Yordy Reyna got them the lead and the results in the other stadiums mean that Vancouver would currently have secured first in the Western Conference. San Jose has controlled much of the possession but has been unable to effectively break through Vancouver’s defence.

43. Minute

More of the same here San Jose are pressuring the backline without finding a way through.

39. Minute

Good chance for Vancouver to hit San Jose on the counter, but Fredy Montero fails to spot Cristian Techera’s run on the right-wing and the Earthquakes can clear the situation.

38. Minute

Not surprisingly San Jose have the majority of possession at 52%. Vancouver, however, leads in shots on goal 9 to 5 and completed passes 173 to 155.

36. Minute

Vancouver now sit even deeper absorbing the pressure trying to hit San Jose on the counter attack.

30. Minute

Moments after the post Seattle Sounders make it 1-0. As it stands Vancouver would still come in first in the West.

29. Minute

Update from the other stadiums. DC United vs Portland Timbers, Dallas vs Seattle Sounders and Houston Dynamo vs Sporting Kansas are still goalless, which means Vancouver would have secured first spot in the Western Conference.

28. Minute

Goal Vancouver! Cristian Techera controls the ball in midfield and spots a forward run by Jakob Nerwinski, who then crosses the ball across the goalmouth where Yordy Reyna just needs to tap in the ball to make it 1-0.

25. Minute

Brek Shea with the big chance to bring Vancouver ahead. The ball bounces around in San Jose’s penalty box and falls to the tall striker, who then opts for a low drive with the outside of the boot. Tarbell, however, reacts brilliantly getting down in less than a heartbeat keeping the ball out.

23. Minute

San Jose are no pressing and another shot is just deflected by Kendall Waston. The Earthquakes now display some real urgency showing that they need the three points in order to stay alive.

22. Minute

Chris Wondolowski almost makes it 1-0 for San Jose. The powerful striker receives the ball outside the box and hammers it on the net. Marinovic is there and makes a spectacular save.

21. Minute

Next cross by Techera. This time Tarbell comes off his line and safely catches the ball.

18. Minute

Almost the first goal for Vancouver. Fredy Montero receives a great cross from Cristian Techera and his header just about misses Andrew Tarbell’s goal.

15. Minute

Not to much structure in Vancouver’s build-up play. The Whitecaps intersperse a controlled build-up play with long balls to the attacking three. Neither strategy is working very well.

12. Minute

A chaotic spell in Vancouver’s defence almost leads to the first goal by San Jose. The Whitecaps cannot clear the ball and Jahmir Hyka has a scoring opportunity inside the box and his shot just about misses the target.

9. Minute

Vancouver now circulate the ball better in the attacking third using the space left by a high pressing San Jose side.

6. Minute

Brek Shea is brought down after he wins a ball in midfield. The attacking midfielder is okay though and the following free-kick is cleared by the Earthquakes.

3. Minute

San Jose press very high giving Vancouver very little room to develop their game.

1. Minute

First chance for San Jose. Stefan Marinovic saves a low drive by Chris Wondolowski. The following corner is cleared.

We just found out that there will be a slight delay in kick-off in order to guarantee a simultaneous kick-off with the games that are taking place in the Eastern Conference.

We are about 30 minutes away from kick-off. We just received the confirmation that Stefan Marinovic will be between the posts today.
