This week’s Liga MX match of the week will be held between third-placed Club Tijuana and the nations most support team Club América, who currently sit in second place. After both teams started slow prompting fans to label them to be in ‘transitional periods’ recent match days, have turned the sides into Apertura title hopefuls.

Home side Tijuana changed head coach over the summer appointing Argentine, Eduardo German Coudet who was previously at Rosario Central and his start was not ideal. An opening day loss to Cruz Azul followed by back to back defeats to Necaxa and Monterrey meant they were rooted to the bottom of the table without even scoring a goal. Since then Xolos have not lost in five, winning the last four. One reason for this turn in form is the goal scoring efforts of Gustavo Bou. The Argentine hitman has scored in five consecutive games now and is quickly becoming a Liga MX success after his summer move from Racing in Argentina.

Tijuana have a short history ranging back only to 2007 in their ten-year history they managed to win the title already, the Apertura in 2012, but Coudet has gave the northern Mexican club reason to believe they can compete with the likes of Monterrey and this weekend’s competition. The excellent form of another Argentine, Victor Malcorra, with his assists and ability to create chances along with the recent addition of Juan Iturbe from Torino adds to the attacking threat of Xolos which could be crucial to their success this season.

The home side have aspirations of one day being as successful as the visitors from the capital. Club America along with last year’s champions Chivas are the two most successful and supported teams in Mexico. This game, as mentioned, is second against third but that is not the only reason to arouse your interest, there is another, and his name is, Miguel Herrera aka Piojo. The livewire coach left Tijuana after taking them to 1st place finishes in Apertura and Clausura last season. Something that wasn’t expected. Herrera had a successful first spell at America and has now returned after coaching the national side and Xolos. I’m sure the Tijuana fans will enjoy nothing more than beating their former coach.

America, like their opponents this weekend, started slowly after a Supercopa MX loss to Queretaro and then again in the opening fixture of the Apertura. After this Herrera managed to get his message across to the players and they have soared up the table with five wins and a draw in eight. America have a knack for always being thereabout when it comes to the championship, and under Piojo you know this won’t be any different.

Tijuana vs América – Players to Look out for:

Gustavo Bou #9

There have been many impressive players for Tijuana in recent weeks including the previously mentioned Victor Malcorra and also Darmian Musto, but it’s hard to look past the proliferation of Gustavo Bou. Five goals in five games, don’t be surprised if the striker makes it six in six games.

Silvio Romero #9

Unlike his opposite number nine, Silvio Romero has struggled with consistency and before last weekend failed to score since April. But against Veracruz, he scored twice, nearly thrice, and had a great performance. Stats included three shots, two on target, two goals and four dribble attempts all successful and won six of eight duels. We highlighted him because if he can play as well as the previous game, we may see him become a regular scorer who could then see America get a 13th Mexican title.
