Whitecaps vs LA Galaxy – Vancouver kickstart their season with an impressive 4-2 victory over the Los Angeles Galaxy.

Whitecaps vs LA Galaxy: 4-2

Goals: 1-0 Cristian Techera (19′) 1-1 David Ousted (o.g. 26′) 1-2 Romain Alessandrini (30′) 2-2 Montero (64′) 3-2 Matías Laba (67′) 4-2 Matías Laba (87′)

Vancouver came out of the dressing room swinging, and had the first chance of the game early on when Cristian Techera’s close range shot was denied by LA Galaxy goalkeeper Clément Diop. He was not denied a few minutes later, however, when Sheanon Williams played a long ball to Techera, who reached the ball before the hapless Diop, and easily passed the ball in the back from 18 yards out. Just a few minutes later Vancouver should have been awarded a penalty after Alphonso Davies was brought down in the box by Jelle van Damme. But the referee failed to point to the spot, and instead it was the Galaxy that would score next when Jack McBean drove a low ball towards net that hit the post, and then bounced of David Ousted’s head into the goal. Things went from bad to worse for the Whitecaps when Romain Alessandrini received a low pass from Emmanuel Boateng at the edge of the box, and finished off the move with a low drive from 18 yards out. Vancouver should have had the equaliser just before halftime after Diop gave the ball away to Davies, but instead of shooting the ball into the empty net Davies elected to pass the ball.

The Galaxy then took control of the second half, and should have gone up 3-1 when Jermaine Jones received a ball at the edge of the box from Ashley Cole. It took Vancouver ten minutes to get back into the game, and Tim Parker could have equalised the score after a corner-kick, but his header sailed past the LA Galaxy goal. Vancouver maintained control, and Fredy Montero would score the equaliser after Diop failed to control a close range effort by Techera. Just a few minutes later the game was turned on its head when Matías Laba scored in his 100th appearance for the Whitecaps. The goal took the wind out of the sails for the LA Galaxy, as Vancouver had several chances to run up the score even further, and in the end it was Laba, who would add the finishing touches to the game scoring a close range header after Diop saved a drive from Montero.

Carl Robinson’s decision to rest Fredy Montero raised some eyebrows around the press box. The consensus was that the Whitecaps were resting the Colombian for the midweek fixture against Tigres UANL. The Whitecaps will have to overcome a two goal deficit, and with a slow start to the MLS season playing your best player in the league should have been higher on the priority list for Robinson. The head coach seemed to have come to the same conclusion at halftime. Montero came on in the 45th minute, scored the equaliser, and then assisted Matías Laba’s for Vancouver’s third goal, and fourth goal. LA Galaxy had the game in their pockets, but in the end it was the individual quality of Fredy Montero that would turn the game around for the Whitecaps.

Whitecaps vs LA Galaxy – Talking Point

Four matches into Major League Soccer Vancouver seem to struggle to fill many of the lower bowl seats at BC Place. The official attendance number was 25,000, but in reality many seats remained vacant for the match. Some of this may have to do with the fact that the Whitecaps were struggling early on in the season. Hopefully the positive result against The LA Galaxy will kick start the season for the Whitecaps, and re-ignite interest in the team.
