Welcome to the Major League Soccer Cascadia clash Vancouver Whitecaps v Portland Timbers. Today there are not only MLS points on the line, but also points that go towards the Cascadia Cup an independent fan owned trophy awarded to the top team in the Cascadia region, which includes the Seattle Sounders, the Portland Timbers and the Vancouver Whitecaps.

Vancouver Whitecaps v Portland Timbers – Fulltime 1-2

That is it the Portland Timbers win 2-1 here at BC Place. As a result the Timbers now move up to third place in the Western Conference. Vancouver in the meantime miss a huge opportunity against a hugely decimated Timbers squad. The Caps, however, still have three games in hand and can, therefore, make up the points in the coming weeks when they narrow the gap in games played towards their competition.

90. Minute

Portland are clever here. Controlling the ball they are not giving Vancouver an opportunity to score the equalizer.

90. Minute

We will get four extra minutes here.

87. Minute

Next substitution by Portland. Harold Hanson is brought on instead of Daíron Asprilla, who has received a knock. The Colombian has been excellent and deserves his rest. Hanson in the meantime is brought on to see the game off.

85. Minute

Portland with the answer! Jack Barmby receives the ball at the edge of the box, but his shot is stopped by Ousted.

84. Minute

Vancouver with another chance. Bolaños brings in a dangerous freekick from the half-field that misses everyone and almost ends up in the goal. Gleeson has to do well to stop the shot.

80. Minute

Brek Shea almost with the equalizer! The ball bounces around the Timbers penalty box after a cornerkick and lands on the feed of Shea. His finish from ten yards out is saved by Gleeson.

78. Minute

Ebobisse’s night is over. He is replaced by Jack Barmby.

77. Minute

Curious scene here. Portland’s Ebobisse goes down after a Whitecaps foul in midfield. Angered Vancouver’s goalkeeper Ousted storms out of his box and screams at the Ebobisse. Ousted is cautioned.

76. Minute

Tactically Vancouver are now playing in an attacking 4-1-4-1 formation with Shea being the only striker.

74. Minute

Robinson with his third and final substitution. The Vancouver head coach takes off Montero and replaces him with US striker Brek Shea.

73. Minute

We are back underway and Portland almost makes it 3-1 after a cornerkick that dangerously misses several Portland attackers.

71. Minute

Injury break here as both Ben Zemanski from Portland and Techera from the Whitecaps went down with an injury.

68. Minute

Asprilla is easily the player of the match thus far. The Colombian time and time escapes his defenders and uses his speed as well as his technique to create chances for his teammates.

65. Minute

Great buildup play by Reyna, who finds Montero in Portland’s box. The Colombian striker is chased down by Portland’s defence, however, and cannot finish his chance.

64. Minute

Tony Tchani is replaced by Canada star Alphonso Davies. The wunderkind played for Canada three days ago!

62. Minute

Vancouver will have to hope that Reyna can bring the necessary spark to a Vancouver attack that has gone completely silent in the second half.

59. Minute

We would really like to have some better news for Whitecaps supporters. Portland, however, have completely shut down Vancouver. Whitecaps head coach Carl Robinson reacts and takes off Nicolas Mezquida for Yordy Reyna.

54. Minute

A common sight thus far in the second half. Portland tries to bog down the Whitecaps in midfield and the tactic is working well.

51. Minute

How will the Whitecaps react to this second blow? Portland in the meantime are reverting back to their first half tactics were they hit Vancouver on the counter.

48. Minute – GOOOOOOOOOOAL

The Whitecaps break forward with numbers. The Timbers, however, steal the ball and hit Vancouver on the counter. Jeremy Ebobisse then spots Sebastián Blanco, who finishes off the counterattack with a low drive that beats Whitecaps keeper David Ousted.

46. Minute

We are back underway and once again it is Asprilla, who causes problems for the Vancouver Whitecaps. The Colombian right away moves forward and has to be stopped by two Whitecaps defenders inside the penalty box.

Vancouver Whitecaps v Portland Timbers – Halftime 1-1

Great first half this. Portland scored early and then attempted to control the game by sitting deep and hit the Whitecaps on the counterattack. Asprilla was especially dangerous on several occassions. Towards the end of the half Vancouver increased the pressure and just before halftime managed the deserved equalizer.

44. Minute – GOOOOOOOOOOOOOOL

There is the goal for the Whitecaps. Andrew Jacobson heads home a corner. The score is now 1-1!

43. Minute

Another Whitecaps chance. Techera swings in a freekick and Gleeson has to do well to stop a header from a Whitecaps player.

39. Minute

Vancouver are stronger now, but can’t find a way through. Meanwhile, there is an interesting rumour making the round. Could Yordy Reyna and David Ousted be on their wy to Fulham?

38. Minute

Almost the equalizer! Fredy Montero breaks into the box and gets the ball past Portland keeper Jake Gleeson. A Portland defender can clear the ball just before the line though.

35. Minute

Asprilla is quite the player. The 25-year-old Colombian fools several Whitecaps defenders on the right wing and then breaks into the box where the Whitecaps have to scramble to clear his dangerous pass.

32. Minute

Vancouver have 54.4% ball possession here. At the same time Portland seem the more dangerous of the two sides at the moment.

31. Minute

Great run by Dairon Asprilla. The Colombian collects the ball after a Whitecaps corner and quickly moves forward outrunning the entire Vancouver defence. His shot finally gets deflected to a corner by a Whitecaps defender.

30. Minute

Portland are the more clever of the two sides. The Timbers let the ball run within their own ranks giving the Whitecaps no opportunity to develop any pressure.

26. Minute

Chance for Portland. Valeri swings in a corner and Roy Miller can get his head to it. But the ball misses the target.

25. Minute

Vancouver are the more active of the two sides without developing too much danger up front, however. Portland, for now, is trying to control the game from deep in their own half trying to find a break opportunity to hit Vancouver on the counter.

21. Minute

Almost the equalizer! Tony Tchani with a great opening pass in midfield that finds Jordan Harvey on the left-wing. His cross then finds Christian Bolaños, but  his header from just a few yards out misses the target.

19. Minute

Vancouver are trying to get back into this game. Portland, however, are well organized and give Vancouver very little room to develop their buildup play.

16. Minute

Good freekick opportunity for Vancouver to equalize the score from the right side of the penalty box. But Christian Techera smashes the freekick into the wall.

14. Minute – GOOOOOOOOOOOOALL

Portland draw first blood. Dairon Asprilla gets a shot off from the edge on the box, which is redirected by Jeremy Ebobisse to make it 1-0 for the Timbers.

12. Minute

Valeri is back on the pitch and creates the first chance for the Timbers when he finds Dairon Asprilla in the box. The Colombian, however, can’t find a way through and Vancouver can clear the situation.

10. Minute

The games is back underway. Valeri, however, is being checked for a concussion. Good to see that the concussion protocol is being enforced here.

8. Minute

Freekick opportunity for the Whitecaps here. Fredy Montero, however, smashes it into Portland’s wall and knocks out Diego Valeri.

6. Minute

Great buildup play by Matias Laba whose 25-yard pass finds Jakob Nerwinski, who then plays the ball to the centre where Portland’s defence can clear the ball.

5. Minute

Aggressive start by both sides here. Vancouver and Portland already had some attempts at goal. This could become an entertaining game.

3:25pm

Vancouver against Portland is supposed to kick off in five minutes. Both teams are still on the pitch warming up, however, it would therefore not be a big surprise if kickoff gets somewhat delayed.

3:10pm

The Whitecaps are here for their warm up. We are less than 30 minutes away from kickoff.

3:05pm

Alphonso Davies and Canada were eliminated in the quarterfinals of the Gold Cup on July 20. Now just three days later he is potentially returning to MLS action. A tight schedule for a kid, who just turned 17.

Travel, travel, travel. North America is a big place, and although Vancouver and Portland are regional rivals, the two teams are still separated by a 5 hour and 15-minute drive (507km or 315 miles). While this seems like a long way for European readers, the distance is quite small in the North American context and is for many considered just a day trip. The Futbolgrad Network in the meantime will get to Vancouver using BC Ferries to get from Victoria, located on Vancouver Island, to the British Columbia mainland. By the way, our Vancouver Whitecaps v Portland Timbers preview can be found right HERE!

Vancouver Whitecaps v Portland Timbers may be a regional rivalry. But the two cities are still separated by 507 kilometres.
