Welcome to our Major League Soccer Vancouver v Minnesota Minute by Minute report. The Vancouver Whitecaps are currently third in the standings and with just eight games left in the season want to make a major push towards reaching the playoffs. Today they host the expansion franchise Minnesota United, who are very much out of the playoff picture. With a victory, Vancouver can claim first spot in the Western Conference tonight.

FT – Vancouver v Minnesota 3-0

The Whitecaps win and secure first in the Western Conference. Fantastic performance by Vancouver, who were in absolute control of this match completely dominating Minnesota.

Chance Minnesota. Abu Danladi has a clear line of sight to the goal and lets one fly. Ousted is on his post and the score remains 3-0.

Tchani wins the ball in midfield and plays the ball to the right to Fredy Montero. His cross in the box finds Shea, who scores Vancouver’s third with beautiful header.

Brek Shea brings a cross into the box, Ibini-Isei’s header is too weak and easily collected by Shuttleworth.

Alphonso Davies is being brought off. Not the best day at the office for the wunderkind. He is replaced by Nicolás Mezquida.

Job well done here by the Whitecaps, who might feel that they should lead by a bigger margine.

Absolute control by the Whitecaps here. Vancouver have 14 to six shots, nine to three shots inside the box and seven to five corner kicks.

Waston with another chance after a corner kick. His header is off the target.

Erik Hurtado is brought off and replaced by Fredy Montero. Hurtado had an excellent game for the Whitecaps today!

Hurtado breaks free after a long clearance by Waston. Two Minnesota defenders try to stop him and Joseph Greenspan plays the ball with his hand. Good freekick situation for the Whitecaps.

Not a great day for Bobby Shuttleworth. The Minnesota keeper tries to intercept a long ball by Shea and collides with Vancouver’s Tim Parker. The keeper falls awkward on his elbow and receives a freekick.

Substitutions. Yordy Reyna is off after a fantastic performance. He is replaced by Bernie Ibini-Isei. Minnesota is almost making a chance Joseph Greenspan is on for Brent Kallman.

Vancouver are more proactive in this second half. Yordy Reyna receives the ball 30-yards away from the goal and has a clear line of sight to the goal. His shot misses the target by a fair distance though.

Three chances for Vancouver in quick successions to put this game to bed. Hurtado close range shot is stopped by Shuttleworth. Shea then brings the ball back into the box where Reyna’s diving header is again blocked by Shuttleworth. The ball then lands on Tony Tchani’s feet his shot is blocked by defender.

Marcel de Jong carries the ball forward opts to pass instead of shooting and the chance is gone for the Whitecaps.

Chance for Minnesota. Ethan Finlay wins the ball at the edge of the box, but his shot is just wide of Vancouver’s goal.

Some confusion in Vancouver’s defence. Minnesota cannot capitalize, however, and the score remains 2-0 for the Whitecaps.

Vancouver v Minnesota – Halftime Analysis

Minnesota have the majority of the possession Vancouver, however, have been clinical and hit Minnesota on the counter-attack on numerous occasions. Yordy Reyna and Erik Hurtado scored on breakaways giving Vancouver a deserved 2-0 lead.

Vancouver are seeing out the extra three minutes of extra time. Absolute control by the Whitecaps in the first 45 minutes.

Michael Boxall hits Erik Hurtado in the face with his elbow. No VAR is used and Boxall gets off without a red card. That fould could have easily warranted an early shower.

Minnesota have 57% ball possession in the moment but are struggling to keep pace with a Whitecaps side, who seem more alert in this game.

Vancouver let Minnesota do most of the work. Fielding Hurtado today was a master stroke by Carl Robinson. The fast striker has exposed the Loons’ backline on numberous occassions.

The current score means that Vancouver would claim first in the tightly fought Western Conference.

Short break in play after the goal, because Shuttleworth went down with an injury received when he came out for the cross. Concussion protocol kicks in; the docs clear the keeper to play on though.

Goal Vancouver! One of those counter attacks brings the second goal for Vancouver! Brek Shea breaks forward on the left-wing and brings the ball into the box where Erik Hurtado beats goal keeper Shuttleworth to the ball and makes it 2-0 for the Whitecaps.

Minnesota with the majority of possession now (52%) as Vancouver gives them room in order to hit them on the counter.

Chance Minnesota. Ibson spots Ethan Finlay in the box. The forward cannot control the ball, however, and the chance is gone.

Brek Shea lets one fly from 30-yards out. The shot misses the goal by just a couple yards. The score remains 1-0 for Vancouver.

We identified Ibson as Minnesota’s key player ahead of this game. He definitely is the heart and soul of the Loons tonight. Ibson has a pass accuracy of 85.7% tonight.

Chance for Vancouver! Kendall Waston’s header after a corner was cleared off the line.

In terms of possession, this is an entirely even game (50% each). Vancouver lead in key stats shots on goal (2-1) and pass accuracy (84% to 77%).

Wunderkind Alphonso Davies, Brek Shea, Russell Teibert, Marcel de Jong and Erik Hurtado are all in the starting eleven. The likes of Fredy Montero, Cristian Techera and Bernie Ibini-Isei are all rested. Some big rotation in a match that could see the Whitecaps go top in the Western Conference.
