Cameroon vs Chile – Sunday 19:00BST/20:00 CEST – Spartak Stadium – Moscow, Russia.
Cameroon vs Chile will represent the matchup between the Africa Cup Champion and the Copa América Champion at the Confederations Cup. But while Chile are one of the favourites of the tournament Cameroon are the big unknown.
The African Cup Champion has recently undergone a major generation change. Led by the Belgium coach Hugo Broos Cameroon have put together a young and exciting side. But as Andrew Flint pointed out on the Futbolgrad Confederations Cup Podcast that while Cameroon has always put together a squad of European stars the team nowadays is unknown to non-experts.
Chile in the meantime will travel to Russia with their main team. In fact, Chile will aim to win their third tournament in as many years. The South American nation that has been without a major title throughout their entire history won their first title when they hosted the 2015 Copa América. Then in the following year, Chile managed to defend their title at the extraordinary 2016 Copa América Centenario in the United States.
Drawn into Group B together with Germany, Cameroon and Australia, Chile are certainly a favourite to finish in the first two spots of the group. In fact, given Germany’s highly experimental side Chile could very well expect to be the favourite of the group. But to underline this Chile will have to win the game against Cameroon before they meet Germany on matchday 2 in Kazan.
Given Chile’s experience and the fact that Cameroon are the great unknown at the tournament, Chile will be expected to win the match by a large margin.
Cameroon vs Chile – Players to look out for:
Christian Bassogog #13 Cameroon
Christian Bassogog is one of the most fascinating players at the tournament. The winger joined Henan Jianye from Aalborg BK following an impressive Africa Cup last summer. The attacking forward, who can also play as a striker, played in the United States for Wilmington just two years ago. When he joined Aalborg in August 2015, it was expected that Bassogog would follow the money trail to a large European club. But instead on waiting on his development Bassogog shocked scouts from big European clubs when he moved to China in February. Bassogog, however, has openly stated that he believes that China was the perfect step for his development, especially as he believes that the Chinese Super League is on the up.
Aturo Vidal #8 Chile
Arturo Vidal is the heart of Chile’s midfield. Nicknamed the warrior Vidal lives from his physical play that is always on the edge of the illegal. A perfect example was the recent semi-final between Real Madrid, and Bayern München were Vidal was eventually shown a second yellow card after he committed several fouls. That said Bayern signed Arturo Vidal because of his ability to be an emotional leader. It is that emotional leadership that Chile will require if they want to win their third consecutive tournament.
